Types of Outdoor Solar Lights

Solar lighting is a new and exciting way for homeowners to light the outside of their house in a more environmentally friendly and economical way. Many homeowners have forgone outdoor lighting in the past because it seems a waste to light an area that is mostly unused purely for decorative purposes. With solar light, however, you do not have to be concerned with wasting electricity. The LEDs or light emitting devices that glow are powered by rechargeable batteries that get their charge from solar energy collected with solar collecting panels. The batteries only need to be replaced about once every one thousand hours or so and are less expensive than light bulbs. The LEDs will last for many years before they need to be replaced. Now that there is a better way to have outdoor lighting, you might want to consider the following possibilities.

Many homeowners use outdoor solar lights for decorative purposes in the garden or as part of their landscaping design. Solar garden lights or decorative solar lighting fixtures are usually small so that they can be hidden, or disguised as something else so that people do not notice them during the day. A common trick is to have your solar garden lighting disguised as rocks in the border of your garden area. Other gardeners will have small butterflies or insects on long wires sticking out of the ground. They are hardly noticeable during the day, but at night their glow is very beautiful and artistic. Solar landscaping accent lights can be buried in the ground so that people do not see them at all during the day. The solar collecting panel needs to be above ground, but it lies flat so there is no concern of people seeing it. Because there are no cords and electricity associated with solar garden lights, you do not need to be concerned when watering your plants or flowers.

Another use for outdoor solar lights is for path lights or step lights. Many homeowners like the idea of the path leading up to their front door being lit both for the safety of their visitors, and for security reasons. It is better if you can see who is approaching your house. Solar path lighting usually comes in the form of many lantern like light fixtures. Many small solar path lights will be stuck in the ground at intervals along the walkway. Each light is only meant to shed light on the two to three feet surrounding it. Once you get to the stairs, you can install solar step lighting on the riser part of each stair so that each step is clearly illuminated to anyone approaching your door. Again, the lack of electrical cords is a nice safety feature because you do not need to worry about anyone tripping on the wires.

If you do not have a walkway or you do not want to have so many lights on outside, you can elect for solar security lighting instead. Security lights are designed to turn on when a motion sensor is activated. That means that they only turn on when someone or something approaches them and then they are turned off most of the time. A security flood light needs to be bright so there is usually a collection of many LEDs for each solar flood light. The sudden bright light would startle any intruder and provides adequate light for any visitors who may have to find their way to the house.
